November 2009

On Tuesday 10th November, Diarmuid Healy from Cahir Dive Club (CDC) and Mathew Cooper from South Coast Divers dived the Sub U260 which is situated approximately four miles from Glandore Harbour. The Sub U260 was a German Submarine in the 2nd World War which conducted nine patrols in total. On 12th March 1945 it was scuttled after sustaining mine damage. The minefield had been laid by HMS Apollo, an Abdiel class minelayer. In her entire career the U260 suffered no casualties to her crew.

Diarmuid and Mathew launched the boat at Union Hall and with the help of the GPS arrived to the site. They descended 45 metres to the sub, only to be very disappointed by the visibility. A dive at this site carried out by other divers in clearer conditions can be seen by searching for sub u260 on www.youtube.com.

Cahir Dive Club are currently running and advanced Nitrox course and pool training for all members in Clonmel on Sunday 29th November

October 2009

A team of five members of the Cahir Dive Club (CDC) experienced a fascinating couple of days of diving last weekend in the Ballinskelligs. Four dives were done with depths of 40 metres been achieved. Great weather contributed to the terrific dives and the team made it out to the Skellig Mhichil both days.

Cahir Dive Club (CDC) are proud to announce that they have three newly qualified instructors. John Ryan qualified as a Theory instructor and Ciara and John Cronin qualified as Open Water instructors. Ocean diver training is going extremely well and all should be qualified in January.

The Cahir Dive Club A.G.M will be held on Thursday 5th November in The Hill Bar, Cahir (by kind permission) at 9pm.

June 2009

Ballinskelligs

On Friday 26th June four divers and three non-divers departed Cahir for a weekend of diving and sunbathing in the Gaeltacht area of the Ballinskelligs, south west Kerry. The Ballinskelligs is a village in the south-west of the Iveragh peninsula in the Gaeltacht region of Co. Kerry, famous for the rocks, Skellig Beag, an ancient monastic colony and Skellig Michael, a peaceful spiritual idyll and a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. The town itself is also the site of an an attractive beach and other historic features.Three dive sites were explored over the course of the weekend. The first dive was done on the north side of Puffin Island. Star fish, pollock, mackeral and jellyfish were the main attraction for the divers, while boat crew eagerly counted puffins. The second dive of the weekend was Skellig Beag. On arriving to the Skellig six seals were resting on a rock by the Skellig Beag and joined the divers underwater, proving to be very playful. Amused dives also saw crustaceans, and patrolling dogfish. The third dive took place late Saturday afternoon with plenty more sea life on display. The highlight of this last trip for the divers was the basking sharks seen on the way back to the main land. Basking shark are the second largest fish in the sea after the whale shark and are seasonal visitors to the coastline…lucky for Cahir divers, they only feed on plankton! Much thanks goes to head chef, Jane for providing delicious meals throughout the weekend for the hungry divers. Much appreciation and thanks also goes to Willie, a local in the area, for coming on the scene with his tractor when difficulty arose due to high winds when trying to get the boat out of the water.

Cahir Dive Club members will be seen taking part in the Clonmel River Fest, the “Tractor Tyre Tube Race” on Saturday 11th July. Two teams from the club are entered, The Blue Hole Divers and The Mugards Bay Divers. Make sure to come and cheer them along!

May 2009

Bere Island

A fantastic job was done by Mary Hunter in organising a delightful weekend of diving at Bere Island, which is situated off the coast of Castletownbere, Co. Cork. A lot of hard work was put in by the manager of the weekend. Plans A to Z were dropped for various reasons (mainly logistic), forcing Mary to come up with plans AA, AB etc. for the eager members of Cahir Dive Club (CDC). All divers arrived safely on the island on Friday evening (22nd May) with thanks to Mr. Murphy’s ferry service.

The designated tour guide for the weekend, Aidan Webster took the CDC members to “Lone Hort Bay” on Saturday morning for the first dive of the weekend. Weather was poor at first but quickly improved and visibility was exceptional. Sea life at this bay was bountiful. Sea urchins, sea cucumbers, dog fish, star fish, clams and much more were on display twenty metres underwater for all to see.

The second dive of the day was at Greenanne Rock. The boat drivers on this dive decided to test the balance and “holding on” skills of the divers on the way out to the dive site. There was a near fatal incident with the box of chocolate fingers nearly falling over board but Mary managed to rescue them just in time. On this second dive the Cahir Dive Club members entered a kelp forest underwater, but still managed to see lobsters, spider crabs, pollock and rass. While divers were exploring their way through the kelp forest the boat crew occupied themselves by taking pictures of the seals that were wandering around the area. That evening hungry divers enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by the head chef Ciara and Michelle.

The third dive site of the weekend was the Zorro Zaurre wreck on Sunday. The Zorro Zaurre was a Spanish Trawler which foundered on Christmas Day 2000. This wreck lies off the east end of Bere Island between Roancarrigbeg and Roancarrigbeg Rocks. The divers went to fifteen metres to view the 250 tonne wreck. Colourful soft coral, a school of pollock, sea urchins and masses of baby jellyfish were observed on this final dive of the weekend. All in all everyone had a brilliant time and all but the tough skinned Aidan O’Connor came back a little bit sun burned.

Cahir Dive Club would like to thank Donny Keating of Cahir Motors for supplying them with a jeep to tow the boat, and of course Garrit for getting it there and back safely.

March 2009

  • Five members of Cahir Dive Club (CDC) departed for Helvic, near Dungarven early Sunday morning. Only four of these five divers braved the elements (with the help of dry suits) of the cold March waters to dive The Rogue, a rock out-crop, near Mine Head, where plenty of fish life was on display. Three dives were completed. John and Ciaran did the first dive, which, according to Ciaran was just like the movie “Finding Nemo” due to the “cute” baby jellyfish sighted by him. Diarmuid and Tess weren’t feeling too energetic so they decided to do a drift dive. Pollack, Bream, Anglerfish, a variety of Sponges and Anmones, a Spider Crab and two Lobsters were among the sea life inhabiting The Rogue on Sunday.

  • The first lecture for new members doing the Ocean Diver course took place on Monday 30th March in the Hill Bar, Cahir (by kind permission). Pool training will commence in the next few weeks.

  • Sports divers will be seen later this week wandering around the surrounding area of Cahir Castle practicing their compass skills under the supervision of Johnny Sheehan…if they appear to be lost please help them out and point them in the right direction.

  • On St. Patrick’s Day CDC took part in the Cahir parade. Much fun was had by members’ children on the boat, with all showing great Water Pistol skills. Pictures of Cahir Dive Club in the parade on St. Patrick’s day can be seen, along with pictures of the recent diving holiday to Malta on www.cahirdiveclub.com

Dive Holiday in Malta

On the 5th March ten Cahir Dive Club (CDC) divers and two non-divers departed for Bugibba, to dive the Mediterranean Sea. Buġibba is a small town in Malta, situated adjacent to Qawra. Nine dives were completetd with fascinating forms of fish life and well worth seeing wrecks been the highlight of the week.On the first day of diving  CDC dived the “X127” off Manoel Island. This wreck at Marsamxett Harbour is 22 metres underwater. It was torpedoed in 1915 and is occupied by Octupus groupers and thousands of Damsel fish.Due to adverse weather conditions diving was canelled on the second day so it was decided to visit the nearby island of Gozo. Roughly circular in shape, 14km by 7km in area, Gozo is hilly and from the south-west to the north-west, the coast is entirely surrounded by cliffs. The group also visited the “Blue Hole” which is a reef, approximately 60 metres deep on the same island. The next day the divers went to the “Um El Faroud” wreck. This wreck, an oil tanker, is 115 metres long in 33 metres of water. The Um El Faroud was deliberately sunk in 1998 after it was damaged in an explosion. Squid and barracudas are occupants of this site. The “Rozi” was also dived. This is a 40 metre long tug boat in 36 metres of water which was deliberately sunk in 1991 as a sub-marine tourist attraction. Wrasse and cardinal fish were identified on this dive. The fourth and final wreck dived by CDC members on the holiday was the “P29”. This was used as a patrol boat. It is 51 metres long in 33 metres of water.  Other forms of fish life recognized and identified by the divers from Cahir were Ornate and Rainbow Wrasse, Painted Comber, Stone Fish and countless forms of Urchins and Jellyfish. The diving holiday to Malta was a valuable experience for all that went, as it allowed them to further develop their diving skills. Keith Mathews and Richard Burcher successfully completed their Ocean Diver and Sports Diver qualifications respectively. The two non-divers, Jane and Julie Ryan also had a great week enjoying the many beautiful old buildings and forts on the island of Malta.
